Fix Pain outlines some of the likely causes of back, neck and shoulder pain and introduces you to some of the key strength and flexibility exercises you need to do to get your body back in better alignment.

Do that and there's a good chance the pain will go away.

An inability to sit up straight is a major cause of lower back pain. Tight calf, hamstring and buttock muscles take the pelvis and the bones above it out of alignment. Giving the spot where it hurts a rub down and a crunch isn't going to loosen off tight muscles or strengthen weak ones.

I said to this bloke, 'Sit up straight.' He said, 'I am.'

At the Pro-Active Rehab Clinic our principal aim is to dramatically reduce the number of people entering the workers compensation system.

We do this through early intervention - helping people experiencing the first signs of joint and muscle pain to relieve their pain by teaching them how to improve their strength, flexibility and skeletal alignment.

We first take people though a clinical diagnostic assessment to determining the underlying cause of their pain, then prescribe and teach them the strength and flexibility exercises that are designed to restore poor function to good.

Our personal clients receive the same diagnostic and exercise prescription process.

... treating personally-generated joint and muscle pain, ie pain that is not the result of a traumatic accident.

A high proportion of joint and muscle pain due to tight muscles gradually taking the skeleton out of alignment. Pain is the symptom of that misalignment. Along comes an incident that 'tips people over the edge'. This is an incident that people in good musculo-skeletal health take in their stride. The incident usually gets the blame, not the underlying condition - poor skeletal alignment and a lack of strength.

The solution is to prescribe the flexibility exercises likely to get the skeleton back into alignment and strength the muscles that support the body in doing every day tasks without breaking down.

Joint and muscle pain is not caused by lack of rubbing, crunching, heating, vibrating, doping or surgery.

Improving strength and flexibility is the most cost effective way to relieve joint and muscle pain and improve mobility.

At the Pro-Active Rehab Clinic we'll provide you with an indication of what's causing your pain.

In a nutshell, the usual cause of lower back pain is tight muscles attached to the pelvis. Once they're loosened off, there is a high likelihood that the pelvis and the bones above it will move back into better alignment.

On top of the flexibility exercises, people who attend the clinic will be introduced to a strength training program designed to support the skeleton as it goes about its daily tasks.

The clinic also conducts classes that vary in length from an hour through to a full day. The longer you do their exercises and the more often you do them the quicker bones will be drawn back into alignment. The pain will go away. No expensive pills or cremes; just you doing the right exercises every night in front of the TV.

Any visits to a manipulative therapist may speed up the rehab process - but it won't take the place of the strength and flexibility exercises that only you can do for yourself.

Pro-Active Rehab's laws of musculo-skeletal dysfunction
A body in alignment stays in alignment unless acted upon by a force. In most cases of misalignment, the forces are ones we generate ourselves. It's our own muscles that allowed bones to move out of alignment.

Just think about which muscles have been acting on your body to force your pelvis and the bones above it out of alignment.

Most musculo-skeletal dysfunctions occur gradually, over the years and decades as muscles gradually shorten, frequently do to our habitual posture, particularly when sitting down.

In a majority of cases the pain from musculo-skeletal dysfunction is self-generated.

The good news about that is that if you have generated the pain there's a fair chance you can 'ungenerate' it, particularly if you catch it early enough.

If the exercises recommended in the Pro-Active Rehab training program are done on a regular and systematic basis you should soon start to feel better as bones are drawn back into better alignment.
I'd go as far as to say that for 80% of people there is an 80% chance that they will fix themselves up to the point where function is restored to 80% of normal.

Remember, it's a big ask expecting to get better by having someone do something to you; sooner or later you have to do something to yourself.
